Winter Walking – Ben Nevis Range

Pinnacle Ridge in better weather

For our third day out we planned to climb the Pinnacle Ridge (Grade 1) on Carn Mor Dearg. Bob having rested the for a day felt fit enough to join us.

We parked at the Nevis Range car park and made our way up through the Forestry which was pleasant enough on good tracks. As we left the forestry, we followed the Allt Daim for 4 kilometres during which the wind picked up, the snow arrived and the mist closed in. After much deliberation, we decided that due to the conditions an attempt on the Pinnacle Ridge was not on for today.

A quick look at the map and new plans were made and we opted for the east ridge between Carn Beag Dearg and Carn Dearg Meadhonach. After a long pull up from the valley we reached the start of the ridge, where we had lunch and made our way along the narrow ridge to the col. However, as we climbed up the weather improved and we were almost treated with views to Aonach Mhor and Ben Nevis.

The descent to the forestry was relentless over boulder strewn / heather and boggy ground and we were glad to reach the forestry track. While on the track we had a further bit of luck and accepted a lift from the Plas Y Brenin minibus.
