Silver D of E – Orientation Day

The great race in progress

The great race in progress

On Sunday, I was working for my friends at Gateway Outdoor, providing an orientation day for a group of young people undertaking a silver D of E canoe expedition.

The day started off class room based where we looked at suitable kit, packing the barrels and route planning, which took up the best part of the morning. The rest of the day was spent on the water looking at some of the fundamental canoe skills that they would explore in the training and practice expeditions later  in the year.

I had a great afternoon on the water and picked up a few useful coaching ideas from the other coaches that I could use in my sessions (teaching blade awareness for the stern rudder and forward paddling games). The great boat race also proved to be quite popular.

If you would like CHMAS to provide this type of day for your expedition then please take a look at our main site to find out more by clicking here.
