Sea Kayaking – Practicing for 4 Star

Chilling Out On Calmer Water

I have recently completed the 4 star leadership award for sea kayaking and was extremely keen to get and practice a few of the skills. Now, I have a good friend and extremely able sea kayaker called Richard who has kindly offered to mentor me through the assessment and this was to be hopefully the first of many sea paddling trips together.

Our destination for the day was to be Anglesey (Borthwen to Rhosneigr and return). With winds of up to force 4 predicted then this would be ideal conditions to practice and hone the paddling skills. All too soon we arrived at Rhosneigr where with surf up it was time to have a play. A few swims later and grinning like a Cheshire cat it was time for lunch and think about the return journey, which with with wind against tide should be interesting! Well, it was too but under Richard’s watchful eye I soon relaxed into the rhythm of the waves and we made good progress back to Borthwen.

I thought that the day would end there but no we practiced rescues, rolling and self rescue before getting off the water. I had a great day on the water and was looking forward to our next trip with great in trepidation.
