Scout Association – Rock Climbing Permit Training

The toys for the course

Chris’ early involvement in the outdoors came from the Scout Association. To give something back he is a Scout Association Rock Climbing & Hill Walking Assessor.

In April, he was training and assessing two candidates for a rock climbing permit. for the Yr Hafod. Our venue for Day 1 was Pinnacle Crag, which is just a short walk away from Capel Curig. Here we looked at effective group management, top & bottom rope systems using natural and leader placed protection. We finished the day off with personal abseiling for the leader and group abseil set ups. We reviewed the day over tea and cake at Siabod Café.

To assess the candidates ability to rig ability to rig climbing & abseiling systems our second day was at Church Crag.. We also looked at their personal skills of climbing and belaying. Next it was dealing with the stuck abseiler and climber.

I’m pleased to say that both candidates left with a climbing permit recommendation and they are both keen to get their Scouts / Explorers out climbing. As a final challenge we had a little play on the Church Boulders. Their was much amusement as we squirmed our way through.

Challenge complete – top effort
