My first introduction to the mountains was through the Scout Association and I’m happy to give a little back by helping at Scouts Wales activity centre Yr Hafod in North Wales and last weekend, I was staffing the third and final weekend of a Mountain Leader Training Course under our Course Director Michael Jones of Summit Mountain Skills.
With due consideration of the weather, we opted for an expedition on the Moelwyns and it turned out to be a mighty fine one indeed. The first day was spent navigating efficiently on 1:25,000 maps and I was pleasantly surprised by how much the candidates had taken on board from the previous two weekends. We made camp in plenty of time, to and recharge before heading out for the night navigation session and I’m pleased to say we made it back to camp without any incident.
Efficient navigation continued on the second day but this time with 1:50,000 maps and it was good to see the candidates use these maps with ease to get to their objectives. We also look at emergency procedures, improvised carries and river crossings and I learnt about the 3D’s of river crossings (Don’t – Detour – Delay).
A few pictures from the trip can be found here.
