Kayaking – Intro White Water

I seem to be spending a good deal of time in Llangollen and this time I was asked by ProAdventure to provide an introduction to white water kayaking for two clients as well as being observed by two aspirant coaches who were working towards their UKCC Level 2 Coach Award (no pressure here then).

Practicising support strokes

The venue for the training was to be the River at Llangollen and in particular the Mile End Mill site, which is absolutely great for introducing beginners to white water. Most of the morning was spent looking at the fundamental paddles skills (forward paddling, turning / stopping etc) before introducing a few white water techniques such as ferry gliding, breaking in and breaking out of the current using a theme of speed, angle edge (SPANGLE).

After lunch it was time to refine the white water skills by running the complete length of the site looking to make as many eddies as we could on the run through. Along the way we also looked at support strokes, river leadership / hazards and a bit of elementary surfing. My clients for the day were tired but absolutely buzzing from the days activity and hopefully, I’ll see them again soon to top up their skills.
