Instructing for Arthog Outreach

Reflections on the 'Shroppie'

Reflections on the ‘Shroppie’

What a lovely week! Four days working for my friends for my friends at Arthog Outreach taking groups on a canoe journey, woodland walk, indoor climbing and team building activities.

Canoeing on the Shropshire Union
Canoeing on the ‘Shroppie’ is always fun and this Year 6 group really got stuck into the activity from the start. The trailer was quickly unloaded and the canoes put on the water. Then the chaos began as the group found that the canoe can have a mind of its own. A little encouragement and some instruction and they were soon whizzing about the water with ease.

Woodland Walk
A wonderful morning spent in the wood with a Year 4 group looking at the flora and fauna and putting up shelters. Due to the specific needs of the group it was a quick dash back to the centre for lunch before the group split into two for the afternoons activity. Some opted to go outside for a spot of bushcraft while others decided that the call of the climbing wall was just too great. A very nice day indeed.

DofE Training Session
The second training session and quite a productive one it proved to be too! We looked at route planning & route cards, tent pitching, emergency procedures and expedition cooking.

Team Building
A lovely day working with a Year 5 group on team building, trust and communication. The morning was spent on the climbing wall and the afternoon was devoted to team challenges and problem solving.

A lovely week working with some great staff and young people and long may it continue.
