Four Star Sea Kayak Training

Dave & Stephanie Relaxing on the Sea

For some time now, I have been wanting to undertake the British Canoe Union (BCU) 4 Star Leadership Award so I set about organising one for Shrewsbury Canoe Club. My first decision was which provider to chose. A few phone calls later, I was booking Nick Cunliffe of Kayak Essentials as the right person for the job.

I have to say that Nick provided an excellent course using various venues along the Anglesey Coastline. Our first day was based out of Cemaes Bay where we looked the fundamental seamanship and boat control skills before heading off to Middlemass Island for a bit of open water leadership. I thoroughly enjoyed this day and was looking forward to the second day with great in trepidation.

The next day with winds up to force 4 (ideal conditions apparently for 4 star) we headed out of Porth Dafarch with some pretty big swell (at least from my point of view). Thankfully, the effects of not having paddled my sea boat for some months subsided and I began to relax into the rhythm of the waves. Much of the day was spent fine tuning rescues and towing in various sea states before being asked to perform a roll. Despite being tired, I thoroughly enjoyed the course and came away a better sea paddler than when I arrived.

If you are thinking of doing a 4 star or 5 star course and are looking for a relaxed and informative course then Nick is the man for you and more information can be found by clicking here.
