Course Directing a Mountain Leader Training Course

As a recently approved Course Director for the Mountain Leader Award Scheme,  I was delighted to be asked to Direct a Mountain Leader training course for Yr Hafod. There was a real mix of weather over the three weekends from heavy rain to glorious sunshine and there was much learning and laughter all around.

We did good

Weekend 1
Getting to grips with the fundamental navigational skills and how to introduce these skills to others. A rather wet but informative day.
The second day was spent on a mountain journey looking at security on steep ground without the use of a rope.

Playing with ropes

Weekend 2
Security on steep ground with the rope and looking at efficient movement in the mountain environment, emergency procedures and lots of discussion about the mountain environment.

Room with a view on the mini break

Weekend 3
The mini break or two day expedition on the Moelwyns looking at both 1:25,000 and 1:50,00o map scales and river crossings and evacuation strategies for an incapacitated walker.

Overall, a very enjoyable course working with some mighty fine aspirant Mountain Leaders.
