Colin – taking a well earned rest

I have been a mentoring an aspirant International Mountain Leader (IML) through his summer and winter assessments and on Wednesday, I was in North Wales looking at the fundamental aspects od the winter IML syllabus.

Our venue for the date was Cwm Lloer on the Carneddau which provided us with a range of snow conditions on which to practice. We looked at:

  • Kicking steps,
  • Cutting steps with the axe,
  • Trenching,
  • Snow anchors – bucket seat, buried axe anchor & snow bollards,
  • Ropes work (belay management¬†and abseil techniques,
  • Snow pack analysis’ and
  • Transceiver rescues

A cracking day out in glorious sunshine working with a lovely client Рwho has his IML winter assessment in February  and I look forward to hearing on how he gets on later in the year.
