CHMAS is an accredited British Heart Foundation Heartstart Provider. We are pleased to announce that we have trained over 400 people in Basic Life Support. We do this by having an enthusiastic pool of instructors that run amazing courses. However, there popularity means that we have to increase our pool of instructors. As a result, we run a Heartstart Instructor course for the potential new trainers.
There were 6 people on the course who all successfully completed the process to become a Heartstart Instructor. They are now all looking forward to teaching the Heartstart Course.
What Do You Need to Do to Become a Heartstart Instructor
There are a number of routes depending on your experience. This group were all outdoor instructors who all hold a first aid qualification. Therefore, it was a relatively simple process for them to become trainers.
They needed to see or previously attended a Heartstart Course, which teaches you to:
- Manage an unconscious casualty:
- Administer CPR;
- Deal with a casualty who is choking;
- Treat someone with a serious bleed; and
- Recognise if someone is having a heart attack or cardiac arrest.
For more information on the Heartstart Scheme please take a look at the British Heart Foundation website.
Once this is complete the participants were observed delivering each of the 5 elements, inline with the Heartstart syllabus. I thoroughly enjoyed this aspect of the course and came away with some new teaching method to try
