I was asked by my friends at ProAdventure to run a BCU three star canoe proficiency award training and assessment course. unfortunately, due to less people than expected, I was asked to provide an introduction to whitewater canoe day and then assess on the second day.
Day One (Intro Whitewater)
I was presented with 4 clients (Ruth, Phil, Graham & Lizzy) who had some canoe experience and were looking to move on to moving water. The first part of the day was spend looking at the fundamental skills on the Llangollen before moving to the River Dee to apply their new skills to moving water. Judging by the feedback received the clients had a great time and it was great to see them running the rapids with ease at the end of the day.
Message From Phil
I’ve just arrived back home in the Isle of Man and I just wanted to say thanks again for a great day, I thoroughly enjoyed it. You were a great teacher, to take someone who has never paddled a canoe before, and give them them the confidence to be able to do white water in just one day, I think is remarkable.
Day Two (3 Star Assessment)
The previous day the six candidates had been to Bala Lake to fine tune the fundamental skills and core rescue skills and were now looking to have a a little fun on moving water. I’m pleased to say that most of the candidates passed the assessment with flying colours and were keen to move on the BCU 4 Star Leadership Award.
