Canoe – Introduction to White Water

Running the Rapids

I always feel flattered when past clients return for further coaching and on this occasion, I had been asked to provide an intro white water canoe course for Jason and Marianne who had been on the canoe fundamentals course some months back on Bala Lake ( to view the post please click here ).

Our venue for the day was to be the River Dee in Llangollen, which is a great place to introduce folk to moving and white water.  Jason and Marianne had very specific objectives for this course and after discussion the programme was put together to cover the following skills:

  • Review of fundamental skills;
  • Ferry gliding and breaking in / out of the current;
  • Lining (using a rope to descend a rapid);
  • River running strategies / signals;
  • Self rescue / towing / support strokes: and
  • Throwlines.

Marianne Lining a Rapid

I had a great day and judging from the feedback so did Jason and Marianne who will shortly be off to Scotland to practice their new skills on a few rivers and lochs.
