Mountain Leader Training at Yr Hafod (Weekend 2)

Cantilever on Glyder Fach

My first introduction to the mountains was through the Scout Association and I’m happy to give a little back by helping at Scouts Wales activity centre Yr Hafod in North Wales and last weekend,  I was staffing the second weekend of a Mountain Leader Training Course under our Course Director Michael Jones of Summit Mountain Skills.

Mountain Day & Team Leadership
Our first day was a to be a full on mountain day looking at leadership strategies, efficient navigation and we opted for a an ascent of Tryfan via the North Ridge up on to Glyder Fach by the Miners Path and then a descent of Y Gribin to finish off the day and a it was a top day out too.

Navigation & Security On Steep Ground
To test the teams navigational ability we opted for a tour of Cwm Idwal (blind legs) finishing at the Gribin Fawcett to work on security on steep ground using the route. With most of the group being climbers, they soon had anchors selected and belays set up, which after a bit of tweaking and fine tuning were pretty impressive. The abseil element probably caused the most discussion with everyone agreeing that the ‘Classic Abseil’ was probably best consigned to history
