Last week, I was working / observing on a Mountain Leader Assessment course run by Paul Poole Mountaineering and a cracking week it was too. Initially, I was working alongside Paul for the first two days as the candidates were put through their paces in navigation and managing groups on steep terrain both with and without the rope.
Then for the final three days, I would be taking the candidates on their mini break (expedition) which after consideration of the weather would be a tour of Snowdon, wild camping in some pretty impressive high cwms.
I’m pleased to say that the candidates navigated with ease both during the day and at night and with 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 maps and their was much laughter throughout the expedition, normally at my expense! The feedback from the candidates was really positive and they all enjoyed the relaxed style of assessment that Paul and I delivered.
