At the end of August, Chris Hughes Multi Activity Services (CHMAS) were providing assessor services for Gold DofE Canoe expedition on the River Wye for my friends at Telford & Wrekin Council. The teams were paddling from Glasbury to Monmouth a distance of some 82 miles of 132kilometres over 4 days stopping at Bycross, Lucksall and Ross.
Here at CHMAS, we see being a DofE Assessor as quite a privileged position and always try and keep contact with the group to a minimum so as not to detract from the experience. This was made particularly easy for these teams as it was clear from the start that they had been well prepared and where really motivated to complete the trip. It was absolutely fantastic to see them just get on with the expedition and looking after each other both on and off the water. For me though, the way they managed themselves through Symonds Yat Rapids was the highlight of the trip and really demonstrated how they had taken on-board their training and applied it.
I’m pleased to say that all the teams passed and I look forward to seeing their presentations for their aim later in the year.
