Canoeing – Ellesmere School Summer Camp

Stopping for lunch on the river bank

As part of the Ellesmere School Summer Camp, I spent a day day on the River Severn paddling from Montford Bridge to Shrewsbury a distance of almost 12 miles. For many of the paddlers this was their first real paddling experience and it proved to be a great test of character as the battled with steering the boat and the changeable weather.

For me the defining moment was when we saw a heron on the on the river bank and one of the less vocal paddlers watched it or a moment before adding ‘ this canoeing thing is amazing as it really takes you to places you don’t normally see’.
